Biography

Nthato Mokgata aka Spoek Mathambo is a South African beat maker and rapper from Soweto, although his roots are relatively palpable in his folk music, the whole is often embellished with electro resolutely modern. Before starting solo in 2010 Spoek participated in various projects, such as Sweat. X , Playdoe or even Mshini Wam , the latter being also the name of his first album released by Barely Breaking Even (Phantogram ...), in this mischief he addresses the political situation of his country on rhythms oscillating between dubstep and African house; There we find Control, a cover of Joy Division's She's Lost Control. Following a participation on the title Dancehall Queen by Swedish singer Robyn, whom he met thanks to Diplo (Major Lazer), as well as a signature at Sub Pop ( Soundgarden , Nirvana , Earth ...). This will result in Put Some Red on It an EP 6 tracks in 2011, and Father Creeper in 2012 a second opus in which he incorporates more guitars, but also more organic elements; the same year he proposes Nombolo One a compilation of covers of South African standards (listening on Bandcamp). As part of his third baby's writing, Spoek Mathambo frequently collaborates with his wife Gnucci, and is behind the Fantasma group for which a first EP Eye of The Sun is scheduled for the second half of 2014.
