Biography

Suffocation was one of the pioneer groups of the Brutal Death, some of whom attributed it the invention of the whole genre. While Suffocation is one of the pioneers of brutal death metal, it is mainly the inventor of the New York Death Metal: a mixture of death metal and hardcore, with very high tempo and technicality. Suffocation is also known to be the most plagiarized band in the entire metal scene. In fact, shortly after the release of their first disc Effigy Of The Forgotten, the brutal death bands with suffix in -tion ( Dislocation, Incantation, Immolation, Devastation, Desolation ...) will multiply and copy the music of the band with more or less success...
Formed in New York in 1990, the band released shortly after its first demo Reincremation, which was enough for him to be noticed by the great labels of the time. The band will choose the upscale label Relapse Records and release Human Waste, its mythical EP, in 1991 (note that it is the first CD released at Relapse). Suffocation then provokes a real tornado in the world of death metal, defying even the technicality and brutality of a Death or Morbid Angel. The EP is immediately followed by the album Effigy Of The Forgotten, which becomes the reference in brutal death, a genre newly created by the band. The disc is characterized by the extremely guttural vocals of Frank Mullen, Mike Smith's constant blast beats, the dark riffs at the top of the technique, and the very hardcore approach of the songs alternating slow parts and brutal mosh-parts. Suffocation, along with Internal Bleeding and other Pyrexia, will become the leaders of NYDM.
After several remarkable albums, accompanied by some changes in line-up, Suffocation splint in 2000 due to tensions within the band, not without leaving an indelible mark in the death metal. In 2003 he was reshaped for the greatest happiness of the fans, with a new line-up (containing an ex-Pyrexia and an ex-Decrepit Birth) and marking the return of the original drummer Mike Smith. In April 2004 released Souls To Deny , a new album with a rather mixed reception. Suffocation released an eponymous album in 2006. In 2008, the band signed with the German label Nuclear Blast and released Blood Oath in 2009. In May 2010, Suffocation took part in a tour with Napalm Death in South America and Mexico. Spring 2010, they embark on a North American tour with The Faceless, Decrepit Birth, and Fleshgod Apocalypse. In February 2012, Smith left the band and was replaced by Dave Culross. In 2012, Suffocation announced the release of a seventh album, Pinnacle of Bedlam , released in 2013.
