Named after the legendary Rolling Stones guitarist and Jonestown tragedy, The Brian Jonestown Massacre was born in San Francisco in 1990. Not less than 40 members will succeed each other in the early years, but it is the formation composed of Anton Newcombe, Matt Hollywood, Dean Taylor, Mara Keagal, Dawn Thomas, Brian Glaze and Joël Gion that signed the first album Methodrone in 1995. Spacegirl and Other Favorites , reissued oldies, is the first of four albums to be released in this year 1996. Follow Their Satanic Majesties' Second Request, indirect tribute to the Stones, Take it from the Man, and Thank God for Mental Illness, very strongly marked blues and country. A year later, The Brian Joneswtown Massacre, now composed of Newcombe, Hollywood, Gion, Taylor, two new guitarists Jeff Davies and Peter Hayes as well as a new drummer Brad Artley, resurfaced with Give it Back. After the signature at TVT, Strung Out in Heaven was born but the group's eccentricities quickly exceeded the label. Despite a clear lack of distribution, the band experienced a resurgence of fame in 2004 with the film Dig!, which narrates the crossroad between Newcombe and Courtney Taylor, leader of the Dandy Warhols.
