The Exploited
Biography
The Operated is one of the most famous representatives of the punk movement since 1980. Rather making the second punk wave (post 77, with Discharge and GBH, among others), the band develops faster and more aggressive music, including a touch of thrash to their hardcore/punk. While history has somewhat retained this very simple and efficient music, characteristic of punk, The Exploited is mainly known for having almost been at the origin of the institutionalization of punk dress: Wattie Buchan was indeed the first singer to wear a punk ridge, inspiring all the generations of punks that followed until today. In addition, their success probably prompted the public to follow the look of a nailed leather jacket and rangers, an essential attraction accompanying the ridge.
Their first album, Punk Their audience is formed mainly in the English proletarian class, particularly among "unemployed". They then followed the albums, from Troops of Tomorrow (1982) to Beat the Bastards (1996) and Death Before Dishonour (1987). Wattie Buchan is the only original member to always be present, the line-up changing many times.
The Exploited clearly claims to be anarchist, proclaiming to everyone its disgust of the system, inciting riots and showing support for the fight against capitalism and police repression. Their words and attitudes are often as simplistic as they are caricatural, but the band has survived the passage of years and remains an essential reference of the punk scene. Their concerts are often the occasion to provoke riots and violently confront the police (as in Prague recently), who they like to boast about. They also seem to be pleased to have received tear gas from German police officers, to have been arrested in Spain or to have been banned from the Netherlands.
After waiting for 7 years, a new album landed in 2003 under the title of Fuck the System . Since then, The Exploited has been running very regularly but encounters many difficulties in finding rooms that can accommodate them. A ninth album is currently in preparation, expected release in 2009, in 2015 still no news of the album.
