Davey Von Bohlen : Song/Guitare Jason Gnewikow : Guitar/Claviers/Percussion Dan Didier : Battery/Claviers/Percussion Scott Schoenbeck : Bass/Guitare
The Promise Ring is formed at the beginning of '95 in Milwaukee (Wisconsin) from the ashes of other "emo" labeled formations, including the incredible Cap'n Jazz, combo in which Davey acted as guitarist. It is also the engine of TPR , which was at the base only a simple side-project mounted with the help of Jason ( None Left Standing ), Dan ( Ceilishrine ) and Scott Beschta, original bassist. From '96, the band naturally signed on the prestigious independent label Jade Tree (Cap'n Jazz , Denali , Hot Water Music , ...) which released a first EP 3 tracks, Falsetto Keeps Time , on which appeared a classic of the band, and of the genre: "A Picture Postcard". After a 7" split with Texas Is The Reason, TPR released its very first album, 30° Everywhere, end '96; the word of mouth that follows during the promo tour '97 encourages group and label to publish a collection of singles entitled Horse Latitudes ; Then, in the same year, their second opus, Nothing Feels Good, which sees the departure of their bassist. The acting will be assured for a time by Tim Burton (another!), a former member of None Left Standing . During this tour, Davey and his comrades will be involved in a snowstorm that will cause them to carry a few barrels on the road, leading them all to the hospital. All will not recover and Burton, a broken arm, will be left out early '98 and replaced by Scott Schoenbeck who, for the record, had just formed a post rock band (Pele ) with Beschta. After a second EP 3t, Boys + Girls , the band struggled to write its third effort, Very Emergency , which was born in '99. That same year Davey and Dan formed a parallel, more acoustic project called Vermont . At the beginning of 200, a new EP, Electric Pink, was released, and that year, The Promise Ring was hit again with the brain tumor diagnosed at Davey. During the ensuing long hospitalisation, the band separated from Jade Tree to sign with a subdivision of Epitaph, Anti ( Elliott Smith , Sparta , ...) which supports the release of their fourth and last album: Wood/Water (2002). A musical (r)evolution for combo which does not prevent him from separating in October of that same year. Davey and Dan continue their musical career in Maritime, Jason is dedicated to graphic design and has been able to work with Jimmy Eat World, Cartel and New End Original, while Scott holds the position of bassist at Dashboard Confessional.
