The Sisters Of Mercy
Biography
The Sisters of Mercy is an English rock band formed in 1980 by Andrew Eldrich and Gary Marx. The band's name is inspired by a song by Leonard Cohen where the phrase "the sisters of mercy" would alternately designate a religious order of the same name and prostitutes. Very influential in Gothic circles, however, the band released only three albums in more than 30 years of existence. The work on sound and melody has always characterized their works. Their concerts are often described as a "experience", including thick smoke sheets with light effects. The Sisters of Mercy is strongly marked by the personality of Andrew Eldrich, a charismatic frontman around whom the composition of the band has often changed. One of the characteristics of the training is to have always used a rhythm box called Doktor Avalanche. Present on all recordings and used at each concert, the instrument is considered to be an entity in its own right.Very independent and wanting to retain artistic control of the band, Andrew Eldrich creates Merciful Release, his own label, and even when signing with Major WEA, he will keep within this collaboration the production, design and artistic direction of the records, WEA dealing with the distribution and promotion of the band. Provocative will, he has always rejected the qualification of gothic, despite the unanimity of the critic calling him one of the founders of the style. His words are often cynical, disillusioned, or even nebulous to some, referring to various artists, philosophers and historical events he appreciates. 3 albums in 5 years, between 1985 and 1990 and then nothing. The Sisters of Mercy will continue the concerts with some new titles, but no studio recordings will be released.
