The Tangent
Biography
Andy Tillison and Sam Blaine (both claviéristes-chanteurs dans Parallel Or 90 Degrees , alias PO90 ) together created The Tangent in 2002, recruited musicians (most notable of whom was guitarist Roine Stolt, Transatlantic and The Flower Kings ) and realized their project with The Music That Died Alone in 2003. The album has a small effect on the microcosm of the Rock Prog, with easy-listening hints, ubiquitous coppers, ultra long tracks (more than 20 minutes for In Darkest Dreams) and drawer structures. While it was a "one-shot" project, the craze for The Tangent pushed Andy Tillison and Sam Blaine to put back the cover with The World That We Drive Through in 2004, which marked the beginning of line-up changes (Theo Travis, still in office today, replaces David Jackson on the saxophone and flute). The composition of the group becomes from there extremely protein-forming, leaving on its way more than two dozen ex-members (notably the participation of Gavin Harrison, drummer of Porcupine Tree), Andy Tillison being the only constant between all the productions of the group. Despite complex music and a line-up in perpetual evolution, The Tangent will continue to release albums that are as sophisticated as ever at a frantic pace, and even to plan some tours. Between 2003 and 2013, at least one studio album or live will be released each year. The band did not talk about him in 2014 but returned the following year with A Spark In The Aether (whose subtitle "The Music That Died Alone - Volume 2" echoes the first British effort), then with The Slow Rust Of Forgotten Machinary in 2017, and with Proxy in 2018.
