The Verve
Biography
From the meeting of rhythmist singer and guitarist Richard Ashcroft, lead guitarist Nick McCabe, bassist Simon Jones and drummer Peter Salisbury, Verve formed at the end of 1989, when they were still only in high school in Wigan, England. In 1991 the band signed on Hut Records, a subsidiary of Virgin Records, and recorded three singles in a tone Rock Psychedelique (All In The Mind , She The last two singles appear on a first eponymous EP released at the end of that same year. A second EP, Voyager 1 , features live songs played during their Gravity Grave Tour in During this new year, the band met producer John Leckie (Radiohead , Stones Roses , XTC , The Fall ) to record their first album, A Storm In Heaven, confirming still Shoegaze / Psychedelic textures. Once again the group met with great success among critics but with less commercial success. It was during this period that the band linked a great friendship with Oasis, playing a multitude of concerts together. In 1994 the group's first compilation, No Come Down (B-Sides&Outtakes), was published under their new name; The Verve , following a continuation of the jazz label Verve Records. Under this new name the band defends on the scene Lollapalooza (which at the time was on the side of Chicago) and throughout the United States their first album with certain excesses (dehydration, drugs, deterioration of hotel room). With the preparation of their second album in 1995, The Verve's music is oriented towards a more alternative Rock, characteristic of the north of England of that time. The group abuses narcotics (ecstasy in particular) when recording A Northern Soul . Noel Gallaher ( Oasis ) signed the song No Cast Shadow (What's The Story) Morning Glory? to Richard Ashcroft, which is the title of the album. With success still not at the rendezvous, Aschroft decided to leave the band a few months after the release of two singles. A few weeks passed and he decided to reunite the line-up to start the album that will mark their story. Simon Jones and Peter Salisbury respond now, Nick McCabe does not prefer to return to training. The trio appeals to Suede's frontman, Bernard Butler, who will only remain ephemerally. Simon Tong (The Good, The Bad&The Queen, Gorillaz), a childhood friend who taught Richard Ashcroft and Simon Jones to play guitar, replaced Nick McCabe. The year 1996 goes without concerts but rather with the recording of the first songs of the third album. Early 1997 Nick McCabe decided to return to The Verve. Five of the new training courses were launched by the EP Five By Five promoting the future Urban Hymns they were finalising. It is with the song Bitter Sweet Symphony that the band finally sees a national and then global fame as they expected since the beginning. Unfortunately they play once again unlucky. Richard Ahscroft having negotiated a license for a sample of The Last Time of the Rolling Stones , played by the Andrew Oldham Ochestra, would then have abused it, returning 100% of the credits to the Stones. Luckily the other singles such as The Drugs Don Touring and festivals are therefore increasing. In 1998, the pressure of a life on the roads, such a success complicates the balance of the group, Nick McCabe decides to leave the formation following the tensions rising with Richard Ashcroft. He was replaced on stage by B. J. Cole but The Verve slowly breathed until April 1999 ending the band. They each set up their different projects, Richard Ashcroft began a solo career accompanied by drummer Peter Salisbury, Simon Jones and Simon Tong joined John Squire (leader of Stone Roses) to form The Shining , Britpop's ephemeral band in the same vein as The Verve and Oasis , while Nick McCabe collaborated and participated on songs/albums. Eight years later, Richard Ashcroft tried to re-establish the band with the help of Peter Salisbury. Simon Jones and Nick McCabe decide to come back. Simon Tong prefers to stay in the projects of his friend Damon Albarn ( Gorillaz , The Good, The Bad&The Queen ). It's with the original line-up that they record the following year, The Thaw Session, an improvised song that revives the Shoegaze roots at the Rock of the last albums. Sobrement entitled Forth , the fourth British album appeared in 2008. Singles like Love Is Noise and Rather Be show the Pop side of the album that is more psychedelic than A Northern Soul and Urban Hymns, as if the need to return to the sources was vital. The album was once again successful until 2009 when Simon Jones and Nick McCabe decided to leave the band permanently following the singer's ego, ending the story of The Verve. Since Simon Jones and Nick McCabe formed a band alongside David Rossi (Violon), Amelia Tucker (Chant) and Mig Schillace (Battery), originally called The Black Ships and renamed Black Submarine in 2012. Richard Ashcroft, for his part, was surrounded by Steve Wyreman (Guitare), Dwayne "DW" Wright (Basse), Qyu Jackson (Battery) and Rico Petrillo to form, at the initials of the leader, RPA & The United States Of Sound.
