Therapy
Biography
1989, Northern Ireland: Andrew J Cairns (chant/guitar) and Fyfe Ewing (bass) meet at a local concert. For a while the two acolytes will repeat in Fyfe's room after school for the latter and the job (worker) for Andy. These compositions will lead to Therapy's first demo? (with Fyfe in bass/battery), name on which an agreement was quickly reached. After this first demo, the enrolling duo Michael McKeegan, a school buddy of Fyfe dark metal fans. Meat Abstract will be the first single of the combo, released on Heroes&Villains in 1990. This follows a national tour accompanied by some dates in England, including a first part of Fugazi.
After signing a deal with Wiiija Records, Babyteeth , released in July '91, is the band's first real galette, which directly propels them No. 1 of the Irish and English indie charts. They handed over the cover 6 months later with a second MCD, Pleasure Death, which also reached the peaks of the charts. Quarterstick Records distributes the album in the United States and Europe Caucasian Psychosis brings together the 2 MCDs under one album. The first European tour followed...
Middle '92, the trio signed on Major A&M who released Nurse in October. Thanks to their new label, the American press and public are interested in them, so naturally they will fly to the New Continent to do some concerts. The EP Shortsharpshock presents for the first time the tube which will later become "Screamager", and allows them to chain radio and TV performances in Europe as well as in the United States.
1994 is the year of consecration for the trio of workers since Troublegum and his singles ("Nowhere", "Screamager" and "Turn") caracolent at the head of the charts (and not only indecisive this time); Kerrang! crowns the best album of 1994, while the tours follow (Europe, United States, Japan, Israel...). Infernal Love confirms their success, thanks in particular to the rock track "Stories", the ride/reprise "Diane" and to the enchanting dark tracks.
January '96, after the bulk of the tour/promo for Infernal Love, Fyfe Ewing, the band's co-founder drummer decides to leave his comrades an act that will mark for many the beginning of the artistic decline of the Irish. Andy and Michael took the opportunity to restructure the band: Graham Hopkins re-employed behind the drums and Martin McCarrick entered the band as second guitarist; The new recruits are "heating" during North American tours alongside Girls VS Boys and Ozzy Osbourne.
It will take two years before you can listen to the new Therapy? , on Semi-Detached. The release of the album is in a modest first and then the promo becomes non-existent because A&M England knows that the label will close its doors, leaving the band without a label or promotion. Universal (A&M's mother house) refused to release the album in the United States as agreed, and the band had to fund the second part of its tour itself. It follows a dark period for the band that lost its illusions about the record industry. The fruit of this bitterness will come in the form of Suicide Pact - You First , a bold and rock n'roll album on ARK 21 Records that very few fans will like, critics showing themselves sometimes slightly nicer. In 2000, Therapy? because of his contract "does" still have an album in Mercury/Universal, it is therefore in the form of a best of that he will release: So Much For the Ten Year Plan: A Retrospective 1990 - 2000 . The following year, Shameless continued the course started on Suicide Pact, but very soon after it was released, Therapy? is no longer part of the ARK21 catalogue, which will prevent them from benefiting from a promotion. Graham (battery) left the band two days before Christmas. 2002 will therefore be a hollow year for the band that will eventually find its new drummer, Neil Cooper, and in autumn a new label: Spitfire Records. High Anxiety marks the band's return, freed from the darkness of recent years and much more in line with its true musical identity. In addition to this renaissance, at the end of 2003 the band offered a DVD (live + clips): Scocopophobia . In 2004 it was McCarrick's turn to leave the band, which became a trio again, and recorded a Never Apologist, Never Explain (released in autumn) again quite black, greasy and rock n'roll, sometimes close to his debut. A European tour is planned for April 2005, after which the Irish will work on writing a new opus...
