Biography

Thergothon , pioneer of the Funeral Doom Metal, a cult fomation among the greatest in the Doom scene, did not acquire such status that after having split. It all started at the end of 1990 in Turku (Finland) with a band of 15-year-old kids, Niko "Skorpio" Sirkiä (Chant / Claviers), Jori Sjöroos (Battery) and Mikko Ruotsalainen (Guitare) who decided to set up a band they named Thergothon with the aim of playing Death Metal. But very quickly the members realize that they no longer have anything really innovative to bring to the gender, and decide to change direction so as not to be drowned in the mass; They choose the Doom Metal for its heaviness and slowness, while keeping the Death Metal aggressive. In early 1991, they recruited a friend, Sami Kaveri, as second guitarist, and together recorded a demo, Dancing In The Realm Of Shades. It will remain a ghost album since the band, unhappy with its work, will never release it. The band did not discourage itself, however, and at the end of 1991 an ep became legendary, Fhtagn-Nagh Yog-Sothoth. Only this one goes almost unnoticed at the time, some adoring this slowness and this heavy news, others, the most numerous, refusing to accept that anything could be as slow. Nevertheless, the group signed some contracts for the release of the record all over the world, with the initial 600 copies flowing quickly. The formation then gave in 1992 the only two concerts in its history, in the vicinity of their city, including Venom's In League With Satan in the Doom Metal version. The experience will never be renewed, however, as the band fails to recreate on stage the unique atmosphere of its record. He therefore decided to concentrate on drawing up a first album, becoming the original trio again for the occasion since Sami Kaveri left the band. The Italian label Obscure Plasma contacted the band to express its interest, and a deal was soon concluded for the release of the upcoming album. Thergothon entered the studio at the end of 1992, for a result that exceeded understanding. In fact, the slowness and the increased heaviness of the compositions resulted in a sound that had never been heard at the time, since no one in the Metal sphere had yet dared to go so far in slowness. For many, this disc is the cornerstone of a new subgenre of the Doom Metal, the Funeral Doom Metal. Stream From The Heavens , the first album of a unique formation in Doom Metal's history, will also be his ultimate testimony. After a final work on the cover and many discussions on the future of the group, the members finally decided to throw away the sponge, their work being too extreme for the time. So they chose to end the adventure in 1993 and take a different direction. Stream From The Heavens was released in 1994, and will eventually be recognized as the masterpiece he is.
