Therion
Biography
Guitarist, singer for a certain period, almost single composer and only permanent member, Therion is Christofer Johnsson's band. He formed this entity in 1987 on the side of Upplands Väsby in Sweden and adopted this surname in tribute to Celtic Frost's album To Mega Therion. After a pure death-metal debut with Of Darkness... (1991) and Beyond Sanctorum (1992), Therion experimented with a more symphonic path on Symphony Masses: Ho Drakon Ho Megas (1993) and Lepaca Kliffeth (1995). With Theli (1996), Therion refines his Symphonic Metal with strong opera accents and begins to experience some success; a success confirmed by Vovin (1998) on which the group for the first time calls for a real set of strings. Subject to multiple changes of line up (more than 15 singers and musicians succeed each other, including the brilliant singer Mats Leven), Therion, under the direction of Christofer Johnsson, nevertheless continues to chart his way and releases with the double album Lemuria/Sirius B (2004) his most ambitious work. From Gothic Kabbalah (still a double album) in 2007 and even more on Sitra Ahra in 2010, Therion, without denying his vision of opera with metal sauce, leaves more and more ventilated influences in his music, thus renewing the sound that made his fame.
