Type O Negative
Biography
Type O Negative was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1988, on the ashes of Carnivore the previous thrashcore band of its leader Peter Steele, and will first name Repulsion then Sub Zero. The band has always played a gothic metal in which we can feel an influence of alternative rock, but also doom, and a lot of work on the richness of the atmospheres. He originally composed Peter Steele, both bassist and singer, guitarist Kenny Hickey, drummer Sal Abruscato and keyboardist Josh Silver. Colossus with a sharp vision of the world and the beings, the frontman holds the lead of a group whose bitter and sensual metal provokes some stir at the beginning of his career. In 1991, he released Slow Deep And Hard , the first album whose texts are worthy of Steele's accusations of misogyny (while he was raised with 5 sisters), while his collection of World War II objects made him look like a Nazi (which with a Jewish keyboardist would be rather unwelcome). In short, the band whose style is still in its infancy is hardly helped in its quest for success. The original cover of the fake live The Origin Of The Feces released in 1992, shows Peter Steele's anus as an unambiguous answer to all this bad press, which will eventually choke itself.
In 1993 the first big hit of the Roadrunner Records label was in the Bloody Kisses bins, carried by as good songs as "Black #1" or "Christian Woman". The group affirms a nihilistic vision of the world, a certain disgust of humanity, but also hymns to sex and death, pikes to religion, all wrapped in politically incorrect and a black humour of the most beautiful effect. Sal Abruscato left the band shortly after and founded Life Of Agony, it was Johnny Kelly (ex-Danzig) who replaced him. Peter Steele's desperately serious voice melted more than one in those years and was found in the pages of Playgirl magazine in 1995 (the band will have a lot of fun learning that only 23% of its subscribers are women). In 1996, October Rust pushed the nail and made a great success, especially thanks to the sexy hit "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend" and the sublime ballad "Love You To Death". More than ever, Type O Negative sets up as a heavyweight of the US metal, while maintaining a personal style, which is sometimes compared to Sisters Of Mercy. Unfortunately, the difficulties of life catch up with the group, between various addictions, loss of loved ones and spleen, World Comin Down released in 1999 disappoints at first public and critical. There is, however, a rare emotional depth that sucks from each title. To keep fans waiting, the band released in 2000 a best of potache The East Worst Of ... confirming its habit of not taking itself seriously. Then in 2003, the album Life Is Killing Me sometimes evokes the 70's metal, the 80's alternative rock, while maintaining the band's assertive character as evidenced by the single "I Don't Wanna Be Me" . The band subsequently left the Roadrunner label and signed with SPV Records for which he was currently working on a new album. Among other details, it can be noted that the band produces all its records, recorded at the Systems Two studio in Brooklyn, and supposed to be Vinnland products, an imaginary country gathering in the United States and Canada, and that one can hear The Bensonhoist Lesbian Choir as a vocal guest on each album. It should be noted that on May 13, 2005, the band, never mischievous of a very bad joke, made believe the death of its singer, caught since 2004 with some heart problems. In 2010 the joke unfortunately became reality, Peter Steele died of a heart attack on April 14, 2010 at the age of 48.
