Biography

Unsane formed in 1988 with the high school meeting of Chris Spencer (guitar, singing), Peter Shore (bass, singing) and Charles Ondras (battery). The concerts began and since 1989 a demo was recorded; two of the titles from this recording (This Town and Urge To Kill ) will be the first official release of the band via the independent label of Minneapolis Treehouse records. Originally, other tracks were to be added to these two songs for a release of a first album, Improved Munitions, on Circuit Records, but the project fell to the water for bleak reasons. The band then devoted its time to filming in the United States and releasing different singles for Glitterhouse, Sub Pop or PCP in order to prepare the stage before the release in 1991 of their first eponymous album on Matador Records. During 1992, the band shot and recorded continuously before the brutal death of their drummer Charles Ondras stopped them. The other members found, after numerous hearings, his replacement in the person of Vinny Signorelli, a former member of the Swans and Foetus. It integrates the band just to begin the composition of the second album of Unsane. During this transition, Matador took the opportunity to release a compilation of all the group's previous releases, which were already often exhausted (Singles 1989-1992). In 1993, the band devoted its free time to composing Total Destruction still on Matador and this album devoted more to Unsane's singular style. For this album, which was released in 1994, the band chose for promotion (despite many tips) to illustrate with a clip the song Boby Bomb ; This clip is no longer explicit and is censored by many media. Following a tour with Entombed and a new release about the band is being prepared at Matador for 1994: the Peel Sessions compilation of songs played on John Peel's radio between 1991 and 1992. In 1995, the band signed on the big independent label Amphetamine Reptile and recorded on this occasion and in three Scattered sessions, Smothered And Covered containing the song Scrape which will be illustrated in turn by the famous clip compiling solid skate bowls for $200! The song will remain on MTV for nine weeks. The band then toured for a year, followed by another tour for Trasher magazine and finally made Slayer's first part for an American tour. In 1998, the band signed with Relapse Records for the release of their fourth album Occupational Hazard, which permanently positions Unsane as one of the leaders of the Noise / Hardcore movement. After three intense years of tour to defend this last delivery, the band decided to grant a break and split up in 2001. Members take the opportunity to take care of various projects (The Cutthroats 9 for Chris Spencer). In 2003, the musicians met. Relapse decides to release Lambhouse , a kind of best of the band compiling audio, live, all the clips and a concert filmed in full, and in 2005, Blood Run's fifth album appeared. Just two years later, Unsane reveals Visqueen , a particularly successful album, then takes his time to return to the bins with Wreck (2012), then Sterilize (2017).
