Biography

Voïvod's history began in 1982 in Jonquières, suburb of Quebec (Canada). Away, Snake, Piggy and Blacky are starting to compose their own songs cultivating the secret hope of imitating Venom, Tank or Motörhead. From this period date "Voivod", "Warriors of Ice" and "Blower", but it is "Condemned to the Gallows", present on the Metal Massacre compilation, of the metal Blade label dear to Brian Slagel, which opens to them the doors of the Metal. After signing two albums, War&Pain and Rrroooaaarrr, the band embarked on a tour of the United States with Celtic Frost. This exhibition allows him to be signed by the big label of the moment, Noise Records, which offers him the opportunity to record Killing Technology in Berlin under the direction of Harris Johns (Kreator, Coroner, Pestilence). The success of Dimension Hatross in 1988 attracted majors such as MCA, who then added Vojvod to his catalogue. It's theirs because Nothingface, the band's fifth album, turns out to be a success due in particular to Pink Floyd's Astronomy Domine take-over, which loops on all radios, but also to tours with Rush, Soundgarden and Faith No More. In 1991 the pressure was such that tensions began to arise between the members of the group. Far from being a vulgar straw fire, they precipitate Blacky's departure just after Angel Rat's recording, plunging fans into the expectation and worry, Away having repeatedly declared that the departure of one of its members would irremediably bring the end of Vojvod. To the general surprise, the band decided to continue the adventure, recording The Outer Limits with Gilles Brisebois, bassist of Jean Leloup. However, the malaise is deeper than was thought between the pillars of Voivod. In turn, Snake left the band in 1993, leaving Away and Piggy without a singer or bassist, as Brisebois proved to be only an interim. Persevering to the end, Away recruits Eric Forrest who will combine the two positions on Negatron and Phobos. Snake resurfaced ten years after she left. Accompanied by Jason Newsted ( Metallica , Flotsam&Jetsam ), with whom Away and Piggy had performed a few sessions under the name Tarrat, the band became a quartet recording Voïvod . But the fate is on Quebecers. In 2006 Piggy died of colon cancer leaving behind an immeasurable work but also of the material that Away and Snake made to honour with a series of four albums, the first of which, Katorz , released the same year at Nuclear Blast. 2008 is the year of a new beginning, the third in the group's history. Invited to perform at the Heavy MTL festival, they require the services of guitarist Dan Mongrain who assumes D'Amour's share in a beautiful way. Drawing again from the sound archives left by the latter, the three survivors add their instruments to the initial tracks of their friend. Jason is in charge of coordinating the operation and mixing the whole thing. Following the release of Infini , and in front of the fans' welcome, the band carries these new songs on tour, possibly the last to take place under the name of Voïvod , with the participation of Mongrain. Target Earth will follow in 2011, then Post Society in early 2016 which probably announces a new album for Voïvod later that year. Vojvod influenced various formations of the Metal mobility in the 1990s. The tone of their compositions, sacked, to the limits of electronics by their cutting, and the use of a clear voice, sometimes robotic, has in particular impregnated the album The Cube , of the French group Suction (now Sup a few years later).
