Biography

Wilco was born on the ashes of an alternative country group, Uncle Tupelo, on the side of Chicago (USA). Group with multiple line-up changes, they are only two of the original band: singer Jeff Tweedy and bassist John Stirratt. Still very influenced by the disappearance of their previous band, Wilco released his first album, A.M , in 1995 which presents an angry country rock that attracts some criticism but makes an oven at the level of sales. It is with their 3rd album, Summer Teeth , very different in the present styles, that the band builds a reputation, even being nominated for a Grammy Award for the best contemporary folk album.
Difficulties begin with the recording of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot in 2000. Jeff Tweedy then asked Jim O'Rourke (Sonic Youth , Stereolab , Joanna Newsom ) to mix and produce the album, despite the reluctance of his partners. Wilco is then signed by Reprise Records, which has just been purchased by Time Warner. After first listening and suggestions not taken into account by the band, the new president of the label rejects the album and breaks the agreement with the band, for reasons of cost and "non-commercial viability". The band then signed on Nonesuch Records and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot became the group's best sale, with 590,000 copies. Since then, the band has been on the royal track: two Grammy Awards won in 2005 (best alternative music album and best production) and several of their songs are used in advertisements (for Apple, for Volkswagen).
Throughout his career, Wilco has constantly sought to renew his early americana and incorporate it into more rock and folk compositions. Their variety of music has often led critics to call them "American Radiohead" (for what it means). Often praised for the sharpness of his sound, Wilco drew inspiration in the 1960s, from John Cale to John Lennon to Neil Young and the Beach Boys. A learned blend always updated to make it one of the most interesting groups in the community.
In 2009, the Americans returned with Wilco (The Album), the latest album and probably one of the best covers of the year.
