Biography

Within Temptation is a Dutch metal symphony band influenced by Gothic Metal. It was in 1996 that guitarist Robert Westerholt and singer Sharon Den Adel, long-time friends, founded the band. They joined by Jeroen van Veen (Guitare Basse), Martijn Westerholt (Claviers) and Ivar De Graaf (Battery). Their first two demos allow them to quickly sign at DSFA Records for their first album: Enter . It partially reworked their first compositions and was released in 1997, followed by The Dance the following year. The album is very well received, allowing Within Temptation to perform at the Dynamo Open Air Festival in the Netherlands and to shoot in Germany and Austria. Ciro Palma took up the position of touring drummer in 1998 and the Dutch continued to shoot on ever larger scenes. In 1999, Within Temptation began working on her new album, Mother Earth, which was released at the end of 2000, built around two singles: Our Farewell and Ice Queen. These hits make the band known internationally and place the album at the top of the charts, yet in 2001 many changes were made within the band. Ruud Jolie is here to strengthen the guitars, drummer Ivar De Graaf is replaced by Stephen Van Haestregt, and Martijn Westerholt who is going to start his own band, Delain, leaves his place to Martijn Spierenburg. They then toured with Paradise Lost in 2003, with Mother Earth at Gun Records for a better distribution in Europe. Their third album, The Silent Force in 2004, marks a break with the dark atmospheres of their previous songs. Within Temptation's music is more accessible, worn by Memories or Angels singles. For two years, the Dutch combo won the awards and made itself known to the general public. A double dvd live released in 2005, titled The Silent Force Tour including the concert on Java Island, excerpts from other concerts, sclips, making of , interviews and many bonuses. The Heart Of Everything, which appeared in 2007, gradually abandoned the symphonic elements of the beginnings, but also slipped into the tops of the best-selling albums. What Have You Done , Frozen and All I Need are the first three singles chosen to promote the release of the fourth album. In 2008, Within Temptation made a concert at the Ahoy in the Netherlands with The Metropole Orchestra and several guest artists. The show comes in dvd, blu-ray and double cd. An Acoustic Night At The Theatre also released the following year, but this time in an acoustic version. In 2010 Stephen Van Haestregt announced that he was leaving the band to devote himself to his other band, My Favorite Scar and the production of other artists. He was replaced by drummer Mike Coolen with whom Within Temptation recorded his fifth album: The Unforgiving, which was directed to Pop music.
