Woods Of Ypres
Biography
Woods Of Ypres formed in 2002 in Windsor, Ontario in 2002 under the leadership of David Gold (Battery), who recruited Aaron Palmer (Basse / Chant), Robin Cross (Chant) and Brian McManus (Guitare). The quartet then recorded its first ep Against The Seasons: Cold Winter Songs From The Dead Summer Heat . But in 2004, David moved to Toronto. He continued his project by also taking care of singing and became a multi-instrumentalist. He recruited new musicians: Jessica Rose (Claviers), Connor Sharpe (Basse) and Steve Jones (Guitare) to work on the first album, Pursuit Of The Sun&Allure Of The Earth, which was released on his own Krankenhaus Records label. Woods Of Ypres reveals a high-flying Black Metal / Doom Metal close to certain works by Agalloch, Ulver, Primordial or Enslaved. For the second album, David still surrounds Jessica Rose (Claviers), then Dan Hulse (Basse) for the recording of Woods III: The Deepest Roots And Darkest Blues. He released in 2007 and reveals new, darker musical orientations for the band. The following year, the musician returned to his hometown, Sault Ste. Marie in Ontario and started working on Woods 4: The Green Album. Bryan Belleau (Guitare), Evan Madden (Battery) and Shane Madden (Basse) come to support him and the record appears at Practical Art Records. A compilation named Independent Nature 2002-2007 is also published the same year by David's label. In 2010, false rumours were circulating on the split of Woods Of Ypres, which nevertheless signed with Earache Records for a wider distribution of Woods 4: The Green Album. In August 2011, David and Joel Violette (Guitare / Bass / Piano) recorded Woods 5: Grey Skies & Electric Light, but David died brutally on December 21 in a car accident. The fourth studio album was released at Earache Records in early 2012 as a posthumous album and epitaph of David Gold's project.
