Biography

Indie, rock, pop, folk, noise, shoegaze, experimental... Hard to fit Yo La Tengo in a precise mould. It must be noted, however, that since the founding of the group in 1984, the trio of New Jersey has acquired a certain status as a cult in the Indie community through its sound research, its doweling and its unfailing eclecticism.
In 1984, Yo La Tengo was a duo formed by Ira Kaplan (guitar, voice) and Georgia Hubley (battery, voice). After making a lot of announcements to complete the training, they recruited Dave Schramm in second guitar and Mike Lewis in bass. It is with this line-up that the first album of the band Ride The Tiger (1986), under the influence of Velvet ienne, is recorded.
From this time on, the line-up constantly fluctuates and the band starts the releases at a stakhanovist rhythm of nearly one record a year. Fakebook (1990) marks the group's first excursion off the Velvet trails and is a group of folk pop ballads from Kaplan's collection that inspired it (The Kinks, The Flamin' Groovies, The Escorts, among others). It was not until 1992, when May I Sing With Me? was published, that Yo La Tengo became a trio permanently, James McNew being the new bassist.
Back to the hazel and dive into the shoegaze and dream pop. It's the new sound of the band released in 1993 Painful, one of its master pieces, on Matador. The album is marked by the incredible number of twists, essays and arrangements attempted by the band. After the release of some unedited and remixed compilations, I can Hear The Heart Beating As One (1997) and And Then Nothing Turned Itsself Inside-Out (2000) mark the return to business and the end of a century for the trio that then navigates between punk rock, psychedelic jams, folk and electronic music.
In the 2000s, the band, still confidential in terms of listeners but constantly praised by critics, continued its releases, between original bands (The Sounds of The Sounds of Science , They Shoot, We Score ) and new sound explorations. Popular Songs was their last release in 2009.
